You have to have had the engine you're going to do the maneuver with at full throttle at some point beforehand in order for it to calculate an estimated burn time correctly. It will also tell you how long you have before you hit the node, and an estimate burn time for your current engine or engines at full throttle. When you make a maneuver node, there will be some info for it by the navball. For example, if you have a 125/175 km eccentric orbit and you're at the apoapsis, you can burn radial in and circularize it to a 150/150 km orbit. They are horizontally perpendicular to your direction of travel. The blue directions are radial in and radial out. Burning normal or antinormal adjusts your inclination. That is, if you're in a 0 inclination orbit, you'll be facing the north pole of the planet you're orbiting with normal, and the south pole with antinormal. If you burn prograde, it expands the opposite side of your orbit. That is, retrograde points your engines towards your travel.

They make it so you can precisely plan a maneuver ahead of time instead of just burning where you think you should and hope for the best, like how it was done before maneuver nodes were added. When I was just getting started, playing with the manuver nodes helped me learn how orbital mechanics work, without sending kerbals into the sun, or out to the krakin. Most of the time, once I start the burn I delete the node so I can see where I'm actualy going more clearly. I use the nodes to get a close approximation of where I want to go, and mostly for the timer. The blue icon's are normal and anti-normal, and I havn't found much use for them. Mostly used at the accending and decending nodes to allign your orbit with something else, (Mun, Minmus, space station, ect) They will change your orbital inclination. The purple icons are accending and decending. they will raise or lower the point on the opposite side of your orbit.
